Aging in place kitchen!
Typically, we think of bathrooms as the part of the house that most needs upgrading to be user-friendly to those with mobility issues or other age-related issues.
However, the kitchen can really use some assistance in this regard as well.
- Have that extra room to maneuver a walker or wheelchair. Add a two-level countertop so a person in a wheelchair can use it.
- Brighten the space with a light color scheme, and appropriate lighting. Vision can become problematic in time.
- Hardware should be easy to use. Choose knobs and pulls that are easy to grip, faucets and fixtures that are simple to maneuver, and cabinets that are fitted with full extension drawer glides roll out trays. These modifications will offset loss of dexterity that some experience later in life.
Upgrading the kitchen with easy-use design in mind will not detract from style or beauty, but simply make it more user-friendly for more people! Ensure that you can stay in your house as long as you wish.
