One idea is to contrast the upper and lower cabinets with strategies like lighter colors on upper cabinets, with darker colors on lowers. A modification of that concept is installing glass doors on the upper cabinets.

Continuing with cabinet changes, what about making a small space feel larger by eliminating the upper cabinets altogether. Instead, install large windows. We have not seen this concept go all the way, but bay windows are popular, both for the additional natural light, but also as a place to put plants.

The cabinet modifications can range to replacing some of the upper cabinets with shelves. These give more space to put things on display.

Kitchen islands are popular, as these not only provide more counterspace, but have lots of storage underneath and a place to sit and snack with the person preparing meals.
