Basement make-overs

Basements can be dark, unpleasant spaces, but a thoughtful remodel can create an attractive space for both recreational activities and storage. Who couldn’t use more storage?

Speaking of great ideas like organized storage (where you can actually find what you’re looking for), what about adding either a full bath or a powder room in the basement, eliminating those periodic dashes to the main floor?

If opening the basement to sunlight is your desire, below ground window wells can be built. Keeping the typical basement room mostly as an open area with game “rooms”, entertainment centers and exercise “rooms” can be arranged without adding walls that tend to cause that closed-in feeling that is the bane of some basements.

If ceilings are low, as is sometimes the case, the ceiling can be kept open to the joists with lighting installed between joists.
