Opening up the kitchen to the dining and living spaces
Create an open floor plan with good flow by opening up the kitchen to the dining and living areas. This not only makes moving from one area to another easier, but makes the rooms feel much larger – no visual barriers! Natural light fills every room as well, without blocking walls.
While traditional homes are divided by interior walls, the lack of walls in open layouts create a visually larger space, and more of it can be used at any given time because it is very flexible.
For an existing home, opening up the kitchen often means removing a wall of cabinets, above and below the countertops. To make up for the lost storage, an island can be built with plenty of storage space below the counter. Sinks can even be incorporated into the island, if desired.
