How to select a contractor for your remodel project
Recommendations from friends are the best place to start your search for a qualified contractor. Before you make a decision, here are some things to consider:
General contractors often win jobs based on their good reputations, but circumstances can change. Be sure to get recommendations from recently completed jobs and perhaps visit a jobsite during construction. This will give you an excellent idea on how clean the job site is kept.
Many advice websites recommend getting 3 estimates, but it is difficult to know if each contractor is bidding on the same scope of work. Selecting the contractor with the lowest bid may not be the best choice. There is an old adage that says “Would you want to fly in an airplane that was built by the lowest bidder?”.
While price is important, it should not be the primary decision maker.
Be aware that the best contractors may be too busy to start your project right away. The best are the busy ones, which makes sense!
Check licenses, insurance, and references! Best of all, get those recommendations from your friends who have had remodeling done recently.
