What’s really the purpose of a kitchen backsplash?

The primary purpose of a kitchen backsplash is t protect the wall behind the sink from water damage, and the wall behind the stove from heavy grease and cooking stains. Backsplashes are designed to be durable; it reduces the risk of damaging the wall behind the sink or the stove.

The most popular type of backsplash material is ceramic tile; glass, stone and marble tiles are also quite popular.

How high up the wall should the backsplash go? This is just personal preference. Some have the backsplash material go up to the bottom of the upper cabinets, and some keep it lower.
